William Riley Vernon

AIKEN - Mr. William Riley "Bill" Vernon, 83, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010. The family will be receiving friends from 5-7 PM Friday evening at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at St. Johns United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. George K. Howle officiating. The family will also receive friends in Ward Hall following the service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Asbury Sunday School Class. Mr. Vernon was born in Chattanooga, TN, the son of the late William Riley and Thelma Archer Vernon. He was a resident of Aiken since 1964, and was the owner of Bill Vernon Chevrolet. He was also a member of Rotary, the Houndslake Men's Club, Houndslake Country Club and the Chevy Twenty Group. As a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church, Mr. Vernon taught Sunday School and enjoyed greeting people at the church. He loved playing golf and tennis, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Survivors include his beloved wife, Nancy Alice Newbern Vernon; a daughter, Cathy (Pat) Scott, Aiken; two sons, Riley (Carroll) Vernon, Waynesville, NC, Russ Vernon, Aiken; six grandchildren, Lisa Vernon Davis, Nancy Allison Vernon, Michelle Scott Swain, James Christopher Scott, Christine Porter Vernon and John Russell Vernon; two great grandchildren, Stuart Scott Swain and Callan Swain. The family has requested that memorials be directed to St. Johns United Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St. NW, Aiken, SC 29801.
