Mildred J. Downey

AIKEN, SC - Mildred “Millie” J. Downey, 91, passed away Saturday, December 24th with family at her side. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 28th, 2016 at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd, Aiken, SC. Born in Pittsburg, PA, Millie grew up in Buffalo, NY, where she spent most of her adult life. After finishing school and prior to marriage, she was employed at various jobs in accounting and credit, was active in the Young Republican Club, and the Twentieth Century Club of Buffalo. As a mother, she worked part-time for Goldome Bank in Buffalo as a Financial Sales Consultant. She relocated to Aiken in 2002 and became an active member of the community. Millie was a member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church, Aiken Newcomers, Town & Country, and Christian Women. She enjoyed golf, dancing, exercising, bridge, and other card games. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leslie L. Blackwell, a brother, Robert J. Labin, and a second husband, Richard E. Downey. She is survived by three sons, Brett Blackwell (Traci), Bart Blackwell (Paula), and Brian Blackwell (Vicky); three stepchildren, Karen Largent (Larry), Kathy Church (Harry), and Mike Downey (Erin); two grandsons, Matthew and Daniel; and step-grandchildren, Joey, Desirae, Derek, Maggie, Jessie, Grace, and Mac. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Aiken Presbyterian Church or The First Tee of Aiken. Burial will be in Buffalo, NY.
