Dare Moore

AIKEN, SC - Merrill Dare Moore passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, November 27th, 2016, surrounded by family. He was 91 years old. Born in Chester County, PA, he was the son of Helen Paschall Moore and Dr. Lawrence Clayton Moore. He graduated from high school in West Chester, PA, where he was active in the V-12 program. He attended MIT for one year, where he was captain of the swim team. He transferred to the University of Illinois, where he was on the dive team and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated from the University of Illinois, class of ''47, with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he served as a Lt. in the Navy. He began working for E.I. DuPont in New Jersey, where he met his future wife, Betty, at a DuPont picnic. They were married in 1950, and moved to Indiana when he was transferred to work on the defense project. They moved to Aiken, where he worked at Savannah River Plant until his retirement in 1984. He loved his life in Aiken. He especially enjoyed tennis, golf, and swimming and the friends he met throughout his life. He was a good athlete, but also was known for his sense of fair play and sportsmanship. He was a member of St Thaddeus Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir, and served on the vestry. He is survived by the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Moore, his wife of 66 years, as well as two daughters, Debra Moore Duncan (Mike) of Athens, GA, and Darelyn Moore Holliday (Bobby) of Easley, SC; and granddaughters Katherine Duncan Bright (Jeremy) and Allison Jean Duncan. He is also survived by his brother, Hamilton Dent Moore of Aiken. He was predeceased by his brother Dana Craig Moore. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate caregivers who enabled him to preserve his independence and dignity, even through the challenges of his final days. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 5th at two o'clock in the afternoon at St Thaddeus Episcopal Church with the Reverend Grant Wiseman and the Reverend Martha Ebel officiating. A reception will follow in the Stevenson-McClelland Building.
