AIKEN - Duncan McDonald Thompson, Jr., (Scotty) passed away at his home, Sunday, October 23, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alberta White Thompson and Duncan McDonald Thompson, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Gail Strickland Thompson; a daughter, Haley Thompson Grant (Simon), of Aiken; a son, Duncan McDonald Thompson, III, (Brandie), of Aiken; four grandchildren, Callum Grant, Scarlette Thompson, Wyatt Thompson, and Barrett Thompson; a sister, Judith Thompson Reed of Columbia; a brother, Michael John Thompson of Aiken; sisters and brother in law Charmaine Kelley, Trish and Danny Strickland; six special nieces and nephews, especially his two Amigos; and ten great nieces and nephews; and his dog and partner in crime, Amos.
Born in Fairfax, South Carolina on June 30, 1954 to the late Alberta and Duncan Thompson. Scotty was a 1972 graduate of Aiken High School and studied journalism at the University of South Carolina Aiken. He was a retired sheet metal engineer.
He loved the quiet solitude of the woods and the mystery of the night sky. He collected fossils and arrowheads on his many walks and had a deep appreciation for the history and archaeology of South Carolina. He was an animal lover who was known to rescue stray cats, dogs, and wildlife-- once rescuing and taking home a fawn to the joy of his two children. Scotty was an avid reader who loved the history of the United States Space Program and the military and aviation history of World Wars I and II. He enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge with his many family and friends and was a gifted illustrator well known by family and friends for his drawings of airplanes. Scotty was an opinionated, loyal, and scholarly man who loved his family, friends, and animals and will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, and friend.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers are Heather Lewis, Cliff Strickland, Trey Strickland, Hunter Reed, Ronnie Hulsey, Chris Fair, Larry Burdette, Ben Harwell, Dylan Strickland, Daniel Strickland, and Luke Bohannon.
