Wayne Jolley

AIKEN, SC – RICHARD WAYNE JOLLEY, 91, husband of the late W. Ruth Jolley, died peacefully at his home, Sunday, October 23, 2016. A native of Gaffney, SC, Wayne was a son of the late Bryan and Vinnie Hammett Jolley.  He was a volunteer veteran of World War II.  Wayne served in the 30th Infantry Division, saw action and was injured in Normandy and upon return, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and in the Rhine and Ruhr River campaigns.  His military decorations include; Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf, EAME Ribbon with four campaign stars and Presidential Unit Citation.  He lived in Aiken County since 1953 and was a retired security advisor with DuPont at the Savannah River Plant.  He later worked in the Aiken County Tax Accessor’s office.  Wayne was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church, Palmetto Golf Club, Life member of DAV and a member of Friends of the Museum and had served as a docent in the facility.  On June 24, 2013, Wayne was one of seven South Carolinians awarded the French Legion of Honor, France’s highest decoration for their service in Normandy during a ceremony in Charleston, SC.  The award was presented by the French Ambassador to the United States.  Survivors include three children, Priscilla Kay Lyell (Phillip), Aiken; Richard “Rick” Jolley (Jean Olson), St. Paul, MN; James Bryan “Jim” Jolley (Marilyn), Aiken; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers - Logan, Mack and Jack of the Spartanburg-Gaffney area.  In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wayne Jolley and a brother, Malcolm. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, November 8th from 1 until 2 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.  Interment will follow with Military Honors in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
