Wade Martin Brodie

AIKEN, SC – Mr. Wade Martin Brodie, 85, loving husband of Sissy Slayton Brodie, passed away Monday, October 3, 2016. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Monday, October 10, 2016 at Aiken’s First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Fred W. Andrea III and the Reverend Dr. Douglas A. Slaughter officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Aiken Rotary Club. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be private at 11:00 AM at Perry Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Brodie was born in Perry, SC to the late Albert L. and Susan Elizabeth Salley Brodie. He graduated from Wagener High School in 1950 and Newberry College in 1954 with additional professional education at the Louisiana State University, School of Banking. He served his country in the US Army stationed in the Far East Command. Starting his career at Farmers and Merchants Bank in 1960, he continued with the bank after the merger with the Citizens and Southern National Bank of SC. In 1987 he organized and founded Aiken County National Bank and retired as President and Chief Executive Officer in 1992. Wade’s commitment to this community covered a wide range of involvement in many organizations, both city, and county. As Chairman of the Aiken Corporation, he was able to initiate the 20-20 Fund Drive, improve the Downtown Street Scape and Newberry Street Festival Center. In addition, he was instrumental in relocating the Aiken Community Theatre downtown and converting the Parker property to parking and condos. As a member of County Council, he pushed for the new hospital and the Horse Creek Valley Sewage Disposal Plant. Also, as a member of the Chamber, he and others were instrumental in organizing the Triple Crown in 1973. In his spare time, Wade found time to be a Board Member of The Aiken Area Council on Aging, the Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership, the Aiken Downtown Development Association, the Rotary Club and the Aiken County TB Association and served as a Junior and then Senior Deacon at Aiken's First Baptist Church. Examples of his usual commitment to an organization include his 55 years of perfect attendance record with the Rotary Club of Aiken and the selection by The Aiken Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” award in 2000. Wade was always quick to give credit to others for the success of the many organizations he served. The Train Depot, the African American Museum and the SRS Museum, show his mark along with many others. Sissy and Wade's close friends will remember fondly the Venison Sausage, Bar-B-Que, Catfish, and Wild Game dinners served at their cabin near Perry, SC. In addition to his wife, Mr. Brodie is survived by his son, W. Martin Brodie, Jr., Conyers, GA; daughter-in-law, Doren Mangiapane, Nesconset, NY; a godchild, Madison Gregory; sister-in-law, Lois Hearn, Johns Island, SC; brother-in-law, Art Slayton, Simpsonville, SC; sisters, Amelia B Henderson, Wagener, SC, Elizabeth B Sanders, Stone Mountain, GA; a brother, Albert L. Brodie, Jr., Perry, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Brodie. Aiken and Wade’s many friends will surely miss his presence and leadership.
