AIKEN – Mr. Joseph “Joe” Vernon Askew, 88, died Saturday, September 24, 2016.
Mr. Askew leaves behind his beloved wife, Betty Hough Askew; a son, Mike Askew; grandchildren, Shayne (Kimberleen Fallaw) Askew, Monetta, SC; Heather Askew (Mike) McFadden of Charlotte, NC, great grandchildren, Colin Joseph McFadden and Meredith Christen McFadden and many extended family and close friends.
Born and raised in Lockhart, SC to the late James Askew Jr. and Azilee Brawley Askew, he moved to in 1953 after graduating from the University of South Carolina. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War he began his career in the Finance Department for DuPont at the Savannah River Site. He was a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for many years.
Joe loved beach trips with his family, watching the Gamecocks, road trips to see the Dennis Lee band and socializing. He never met a stranger and was the best story-teller ever. His unique sense of humor and ability to make everybody laugh will be missed by so many.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM Tuesday, September 27 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with the service to follow at 12:00 PM. The Reverend Stephen Roehrs and Pastor Gary Williams will officiate. A grave side service for family will be held Wednesday, September 28 in the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church , Union, SC.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make memorial contributions to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 902 Hitchcock Dr. SW, SC 29803.
