Margaret B Sires

AIKEN - Mrs. Margaret B. Sires, 80, beloved wife of Melvin J. Sires, III, passed away Friday, April 29, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her loved ones. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at St. John’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nancy Reed, the Rev. Kristen Dollar and the Rev. Cathy Cole officiating. Mrs. Sires was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late William Paul and Marian Louise Jones Burleson. Margaret and Melvin met in 1955 while he was on active duty with the U. S. Navy stationed in her hometown of Norfolk, VA. They were married in a military wedding on December 1, 1957. After moving to Aiken in 1961, she became very active in the community. She was a charter member for the Aiken Gem and Mineral Society, and a member of the Aiken Radio Control Society, the Highland Park Women’s Golf Association and St. John’s United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and helped with church league basketball. Other interests included ceramics, china painting, R/C model airplanes, photography, reading, listening to music and backyard birding. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sires is survived by daughter Elizabeth (Bob) King, Santa Fe, NM, brother; William O. (Judy) Burleson, Eagle Rock, VA, sister-in-law; Patricia (James) Sutton, Ft. Valley, GA, nieces and nephews; Lara, Marc, Stephanie, Susan, Erin, Caroline, Wesley, Lyosha, Kylee and her four legged children, Remington and Kimber. Margaret's family is grateful for the recent care provided by the nurses and respiratory therapists in the ICU at the Aiken Regional Medical Centers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed St. Johns United Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St NW, Aiken, SC 29801 or to the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare, 199 Willow Run Road, Aiken, SC 29801. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday, May 2, 2016 at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC.
