AIKEN, SC – EDWARD VINCENT SOMERS III, 68, beloved husband of Theresa A. Somers, died suddenly Wednesday, September 16, 2015 while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Ed was a son of the late Edward Vincent, Jr., and Dorothy Fuchs Somers.  In preparation for his much anticipated 50th high school reunion, Ed wrote this autobiography for a memory book that the family would like to share.  “I'm not into wanting to sound too self important. I have had an unbelievable life and I hope many others have been as lucky as I have been. Right after high school graduation in 1965, I went to Penn State and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1969.  I later went to graduate school at Pitt, graduating in 1979 with a Masters Degree in Energy Resources. I began my career with Westinghouse Atomic Power Division on my 22nd birthday and spent the next 36 years working for Westinghouse. During that time I worked in Pennsylvania, New York, and South Carolina before retiring in 2005. In 1976 I married Theresa. We have two children, a son and a daughter. Our daughter is married and has two children, a 3-1/2 year old daughter, whom I spoil as much as I can and a 4 month old son. As for accomplishments, my proudest ones come from my days as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader while our children were growing up. I had the opportunity to watch and guide a number of young men and ladies as they successfully waded their way through being teenagers. I honestly believe that I learned at least as much as I taught. As for career accomplishments, I had the opportunity to do many first-of-a-kind things during my working years." Ed was a former member of the board of directors of the SRS Retirement Association.  An avid Penn State fan, Ed was currently the President of the Aiken – Augusta Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Survivors, in addition to his wife Theresa, include a daughter, Christina M. Riles (Robert S.), Lexington, SC; a son, David M. Somers, Anderson, SC; two grandchildren, Caroline Dorothy Riles and Robert Scott Riles, Jr.; two sisters, Mary Virginia Somers and Karen Cummings; four brothers, Joseph Somers, Thomas Somers, Patrick Somers and Jeff Swanson; step-mother, Joyce K. Somers and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private.
