Aiken, SC - William (Bill) Francis McCarthy age 86, died at home in the loving care of his family, June 28, 2012. Beloved husband of Carol Ann (nee Dahl), father of William (Jary) McCarthy, Kathy (Wayne) Wickboldt, Donald (Vicky) McCarthy, Kevin (Carol) McCarthy, and Jim (Brenda) McCarthy, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Laverne (1984). He is also survived by his step children Richard (Janet) Lotter, Karl (Teresa) Lotter, Kristen (Donald) Moore, Donald Lotter and Michael Lotter. He was the proud grandfather of twelve and great-grandfather of fifteen and had numerous nieces and nephews. Bill held a special place in his heart for his sister Eileen Schumann, deceased brother Robert McCarthy, and sister-in-law Pat McCarthy. Bill was born in Chicago, attended the University of Illinois and proudly served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII. He started his engineering career in 1948 and became a mechanical and fire protection engineer working on numerous landmark buildings in Chicago, Hawaii, and elsewhere while working for the firm of Rolf Jensen and Associates. Bill and Carol enjoyed traveling the world, yet he also found happiness working in his home garden and golfing with his friends in Woodside. They treasured their retirement in Hilton Head and Aiken. The family will receive friends Thursday July 5th from 6-8pm at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 E Pine Log Rd. Aiken and a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, corner of Park and York, in Aiken, Friday morning July 6th at 10 am. Interment services for family and friends will be held at a later date in Chicago, Illinois.
