Robert E. Gunnels, Jr.

AIKEN, SC – ROBERT E. GUNNELS, JR., 71, of Aiken, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Aiken County, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Learter Redd Gunnels, Sr.. Bobby attended the University of South Carolina on a golf scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He was formerly a regional manager for Boston Distilleries and was the former owner of Palmetto Package. He was a former part owner and manager of Houndslake Country Club and a former manager of Woodside Plantation Country Club. He was the secretary / treasurer of Sundance Cleaners, Inc., and was a member of the Aiken Businessmen’s Club. Survivors include his sons; Robert E. “Trey” (Brandy) Gunnels III, Aiken, Thomas Cameron “Cam” (Penny) Gunnels, Aiken, William Dwain “Den” (Jacqueline) Gunnels, Wilmington, NC, a daughter, Terri (Ken) Paith, Sherman, TX, twelve grandchildren, Dylan, Austin, Marshall, Savannah, Haley, Summer, Mary Grace, Dwain, Roberta, Kristen, Leslie and Jenny and two great-grandchildren, Helen and Jonah. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Clayton “Clay” Gunnels and his brother, Michael Gunnels. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with The Rev. Charlotte Waldrop officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC.
